MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- A second half surge derailed the Mississippi College women's basketball team's attempt at avenging a prior setback as the Choctaws fell 65-55 at Auburn University at Montgomery on Thursday, Feb. 1. MC moves to 7-12 on the season and 6-10 in Gulf South Conference play. The Warhawks improved to 12-7 on the campaign and 10-5 in league action.
Â
Amelia Bell led the team in scoring for the second consecutive game as she totaled 18 points. The scoring effort comes on the heels of a career-high 30-point night at Christian Brothers University earlier in the week.
Â
Karly Ivy joined the O'Fallon, Ill., native in double figures as she posted 13 points and tied Bell for tops on the team in rebounds as the duo combined for 12 of the team's 31 boards. They evenly split the 12 rebounds with six each.
Â
MC shot 40.4 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the arc as they connected on just 4-for-14. The Blue and Gold was also limited at the charity stripe as it made just 14 trips over the course of the 40-minute game and converted 64.3 of its shots.
Â
Tian Addison paced AUM with 21 points as she was one of three players in double digits. Danielle Luckey led the team on the glass with 12 rebounds. The team shot 42.0 percent from the floor, including a 37.5 clip from the 3-point line. The Orange and Black converted on 14 of its 20 shots from the free-throw line and hauled in 35 rebounds.
Â
The Choctaws opened the game with a 19-14 lead following the first 10 minutes of action and went into the intermission holding a 35-29 advantage. However, they struggled to maintain the lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action as AUM outscored the visitors from the Magnolia State, 19-11, and clung to a 48-46 advantage following the third period.
Â
MC held the deficit to within single digits over the opening minutes of the final stanza, but the Orange and Black would build its lead and watch it swell to double digits with 3:49 left to play on a Grace O'Gara 3-pointer. The lead never dipped under double figures the remainder of the way.
Â
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 as it travels to Montevallo, Ala., and a pivotal contest against the University of Montevallo. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
