Women's Hoops Rally Falls Short at No. 20 Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team rallied, but came up short in Gulf South Conference action at No. 20 Union University, falling 77-66 at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 7. MC falls to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
 
The Choctaw outscored Union over the final three quarters, but could not overcome a 12-point deficit in the opening minutes. The Bulldogs led from post to post in the outing.
 
Tiara Abron produced her second 20-point effort of the season as she led all scorers with 21 points. The point total is a career-high for the Senatobia, Miss., native as she surpassed her previous high of 20 points set earlier this season at Spring Hill College.
 
Amelia Bell joined Abron in double-digit scoring with 10 points and the O'Fallon, Ill., product also grabbed seven rebounds. Keller Bigham paced the squad on the glass with eight boards to edge out Bell for tops on the team. The total for Bigham stands just two shy of her season-high.
 
MC out-rebounded the Bulldogs in the contest as the Blue and Gold grabbed 39 in the contest and bested UU by 19 in the category. The Choctaw totaled 26 on the defensive end as it limited the Bulldogs second-chance points. The visitors from the Magnolia State posted 19 points in the category while UU managed just two points.
 
The Choctaw shot 44.2 percent from the field, including a 42.1 clip from the 3-point line – second-best by the program this season. MC shot 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.
 
The Blue and Gold outscored Union 21-18 in the second quarter to trail by nine points at the intermission and continued to chip away in the third stanza as it headed into the final 10 minutes trailing 60-53, after holding a 17-15 scoring edge in the period.
 
Emily Moore led Union in scoring with 13 points while Jazalyn Anousinh added 11. Macey Lee paced the team on the glass with four rebounds. UU shot 52.0 percent from the floor in the performance, with a 35.3 percent from behind the arc and 73.1 from the charity stripe.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 as it hosts the University of Montevallo in GSC action. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
