Choctaws Fall to Harding 2-1 in Home Opener

Clinton, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team dropped their home opening match against GAC opponent in Harding University 2-1 on Friday afternoon (September 8th).

The win for Harding (2-1-1) means that they avenged their loss last year against MC by a score of 1-0. Each team came out victorious on the road in the two teams' home-and-home stand. The first half saw no goals scored, although plenty of chances arose for the Choctaws. In total, MC amassed nine shots to the Bisons' two as both squads went into the half scoreless.

In the 68th minute, however, the Bisons struck first off the right foot of Jacob Hernandez inside the box to give the Bison the lead. MC would answer back just four minutes later, though, as Max Buesch follows a deflected shot in the box to tie up the match at one. The goal for Buesch marks his second straight game with a ball in the back of the net for the freshman.

Five minutes later, in the 76th minute, Harding put in the eventually winning goal from Camilo Porto from just inside the penalty box. The rest of the match saw a pair of cards given to each team as the tempo heightened, but the Choctaws were unable to muster a comeback late.

In total, MC had a 12-4 advantage with shots on target, with keeper Cole Turner picking up a duo of saves on the match, with Jared Nitz in goal for Harding with eight.

The Choctaws (2-1) face another GAC opponent at Robert P. Longabaugh Field as Ouachita Baptist comes to visit on Sunday afternoon. MC defeated the Tigers 3-1 last season as the match will be their last before GSC play begins. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. CT in Clinton.
