Volleyball Opens GSC Action with Four-Set Victory

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team opened Gulf South Conference action with a four-set victory over Auburn University at Montgomery on Tuesday, Sept. 19 in front of a crowd of 369 inside A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The victory is the fifth straight for the Choctaws (2-6, 1-0 GSC) in series with the visitors from the State Capitol of Alabama and the eighth all-time.

Caroline Chastang and Lydia Paulette posted double-figure kills en route to the win. Chastang led the way with 17 kills while Paulette added 12. It marks the 22nd career contest with double-digit kills for Chastang and the 31st for Paulette.

Ali Wiggins paced the squad with a career 25 assists and the eighth time with 20 or more. Caylin Pixley dished out 13 dimes in the contest.

On the defensive end, four different Choctaws recorded a block, led by Sloane FitzHenry with two. Missy Beber gathered 10 digs.

MC opened up the contest with wins in the first two sets (25-20, 25-21), but AUM refused to fall in straight sets and battled back in the third with a 28-26 win. The Blue and Gold avenged the third-set stumble and ran the Warhawks off the floor in the fourth set with a 25-12 victory. The Choctaws scored the first six points of the set.

The lead swelled to 14-4 off a kill from Chastang, forcing the Warhawks into their second and final timeout of the set. Paulette followed with an ace out of the pause in action to place the deficit at 11 points and the Black and Orange did draw closer the remainder of the set.

MC finished the night hitting .295 – a season-high for the squad and held AUM to a .106 clip – a season-low for the opposition.

Ruth Sconocchini led the Warhawks with 17 kills – the only AUM player in double figures for the contest.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22 as it travels to Jackson, Tenn., to face Union University. First serve from Fred DeLay Gymnasium is at 6 p.m.
