Clinton, Miss. ---- The Mississippi College men's soccer team tied with the fifth ranked University of West Florida 1-1 this Friday afternoon (September 15th) in their first conference match of the season.
Although the first half saw no goals into the back of the net, the Choctaws were able to control the offense and win the shot battle by a margin of 7-3. The MC defense also stopped three corners on the half as well. The final seven minutes saw complete control for the Choctaws as two different players recorded three shots, but all were either saved or blocked by and Argonauts player.
The start of the second half saw the Argos start to get their rhythm on offense, but it was the Choctaws who struck first. In the 55th minute,
Kento Tani created his own space on the edge of the box from a defender and delivered a beautiful curling ball into the top corner past the UWF keeper to make it a 1-0 match. However, after an array of yellow cards on both sides, four a piece when the game was over, West Florida tied it back up off the head of Jack Patching coming from a cross in the box.
Neither team was able to rally for any more goals as the final whistle blew with the match being a draw. The Choctaws held a 6-5 advantage with shots on goal and a four shot margin was in their favor as well, 14-10.
Cole Turner also had a defensive showing, making four saves on the afternoon. The draw gives the Choctaws and the Argos one point on the GSC table, as it was both squads first conference match.
Mississippi College (3-1-1) returns back to the pitch Sunday afternoon where they play host to Spring Hill, who are fresh off a victory over Delta State. The match is set to kick off at 3:30, or approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
