OXFORD, Ala. --- #14 Mississippi College started their postseason campaign in the first round of the GSC Tournament with a 5-3 victory over Union on Wednesday in Oxford, Ala.
The first two innings of the game were scoreless, yet in the bottom of the third inning, Mississippi College opened the scoring with a three-run homer from GSC Player of the Year, McCall Lee, who brought Shelby Samples and Alexis Laughlin home to give MC a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, Jenna Ergle hit an RBI single to second base, allowing Emily Rigney to score to put MC up 4-0. Jordan LaFosse followed with a bunt single to shortstop, allowing Jordan Moore to advance to second base and Hannah Tauzin to score on a fielding error.
Union responded in the top of the sixth inning, as Alarcon homered to left field, driving in two runs to cut thee Choctaw lead to 5-2. Union added a second home run to center field, scoring one run to make it a 5-3 ballgame.
Avery Barnett, in relief of Camryn Bailey, shutout Union the rest of the way, as MC went on to clinch the 5-3 first round win to move on in GSC Tournament.
Bailey earned the win, improving her record to 23-4 on the season while Avery Barnett picked up the save in relief. MC had six hits as a unit with McCall Lee finishing with two hits and three runs batted in, including her 15th home run of the season.
Jenna Ergle collected two hits in the game with a run batted in, while Jordan LaFosse and Brooke Fagan each tallied one hit.
Mississippi College improved to 41-8 overall on the season, breaking the school single season wins record, previously set in 2019 (40-16 overall).
With this win, Mississippi College will now move on to face West Alabama in the next round of the GSC Tournament tomorrow at 3:30 pm at the Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.
