Choctaw Athletics records best finish ever

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- As the 2022-23 athletic season winds down, the Gulf South Conference announced its final all-sports trophy standings and Mississippi College Athletics ranked among the elite in the conference.
 
Choctaw Sports finished third among active GSC members – marking its best finish in school history. The men and women's athletic teams combined for 113.625 points. The point total surpassed the previous high of 91.625 last season, which landed the department in fifth – also the previous best finish.
 
MC women's athletics led the charge headlined by the soccer team's GSC title in the fall. The women's athletic programs garnered their best finish in program history as well as it finished third with 43.0 points. The previous best was fourth set at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season and matched during the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.
 
The women's soccer team won the GSC Tournament to follow up a second place finish in the regular season standings. The Lady Choctaws rode this to an appearance in the NCAA tournament. Softball finished runner-up in the conference's regular season, advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament and earned a NCAA South Regional berth.
 
Women's cross country and indoor and track and field each finished second at the conference championships while the women's outdoor squad finished third. Volleyball posted its best season in school history as it broke the program record for wins, finished third in the regular season and advanced to the quarterfinals in the conference tournament.
 
The men's programs finished sixth with 35.125 points as indoor track and field led the charge following a conference title. Men's outdoor track and field along with cross country each finished second at the conference championships.
 
The men's soccer team made a run to the semifinals of the GSC Tournament, after finishing sixth in the regular season, and basketball made the conference tournament for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign and advanced to the quarterfinals.
 
The best finish for the men's program is third – set by the 1984 team and matched by the 1995 teams.
 
Of the 18 GSC Championships, Choctaw athletics earned 15 berths.
 
The All-Sports rankings take into account the team's final ranking spot in both the regular season standings, and where the team finished in the conference tournament.
