CLINTON, Miss. - In a day filled with suspense, excitement, and high-level competition, Mississippi College Track and Field hosted the annual Mike McMillan Invitational on Friday, April 28, providing a showcase for the Choctaw's exceptional talent in the sport of Track and Field.
The last event of the day, the Men's 4x400-meter relay, which consisted of
Fabio Palmieri,
Connor Stewart,
Gabe Hodson, and
Niklas Klei, perfectly captured the spirit of the event. The Choctaws were aiming for a national-qualifying mark and faced stiff competition against Hinds Community College and William Carey University, two national-caliber programs in their respective divisions.
In a nail-biting finish, the Choctaws crossed the line in first with a time of 3:08.51, securing the third fastest time in NCAA Division II this season.
But what was even more captivating was the outpouring of support as nearly 100 fans, teammates, and family members stormed the finish line, creating a truly unforgettable atmosphere that encapsulated the passion and camaraderie throughout the day's events.
There were numerous standout performances in the field events that deserve special mention. Recently named GSC Field Athlete of the Week, Al Ferrill, broke the school record in the Men's Shot Put with an impressive NCAA DII Provisional and GSC-leading mark of 16.63 meters. Ferrill's performance led a series of lifetime bests in the event, showcasing the hard work and determination of the competitors.
Fellow teammate Rashanna Thorne took first place in the Women's Shot Put, earning her second win of the season. Ferrill went on to secure two more victories in the Men's Discus and Weight Throw, demonstrating his versatility and prowess in the field events. Additionally, Sakari Faulkner won the Women's Discus, and Essence Tornabene took the top spot in the Women's Hammer Throw, adding to the Choctaws' impressive list of achievements during the invitational.
Meanwhile, the running events at the McMillan Invitational were just as exciting. The Men's 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Kevin Turner, Niklas Klei, Shemar Patten, and Fabio Palmieri, set the tone for the day by breaking the school record with a winning time and NCAA Division II provisional mark of 40.34 seconds. This outstanding performance currently ranks them at No. 12 nationally.
In the 1500-meter runs, the Choctaws demonstrated their dominance by sweeping both the men's and women's events. Cole Benoit claimed victory in the Men's 1500m with a NCAA Division II provisional mark of 3:45.4, placing him at No. 14 in the nation. On the women's side, Emily Berry earned her second win of the season in the 1500m with a time of 4:42.7. Both Benoit and Berry led a series of lifetime bests in the event.
The excitement continued in the 800-meter run, with school record holder Jazmin Hernandez taking the top spot in 2:13.43, inspiring multiple lifetime bests for the Choctaws in that event. Meanwhile, recent 2023 NCAA Division II All-American Kelechi Christian continued to impress, winning the 400-meter dash in a GSC-leading mark and school record of 54.87 seconds. This NCAA Division II provisional mark currently places her at No. 20 in the nation, further highlighting the incredible achievements of the athletes at the invitational.
It is important to acknowledge that every athlete who participated in the Mike McMillan Invitational played a role in the event's success and electrifying atmosphere. The collective effort of all competitors contributed to an astounding 45 lifetime bests set during the invitational, making it the most accomplished outdoor meet of the season.
Win after win, lifetime best after lifetime best, the athletes proved their mettle on the track and field. More than just a competition, the invitational also served as an opportunity to celebrate and honor the seniors in the program who will be moving on next year.
However, the most significant theme of the day was the undeniable Choctaw family culture. The support, encouragement, and camaraderie shared among teammates, coaches, and fans created an electric atmosphere that fueled the athletes to push their limits and achieve their best. As the Mike McMillan Invitational comes to a close, Mississippi College Track and Field athletes now shift their focus to the upcoming 2023 Gulf South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The event will take place on May 4-6, providing another platform for the Choctaws to showcase their exceptional talent and dedication to their sport. With the momentum from the invitational behind them, the athletes are poised to deliver even more remarkable performances at the conference championships.
