CLINTON, Miss. --- #15 Mississippi College clinched their ninth straight Gulf South Conference series win and set a new school record for most regular season wins with 39 in a season after sweeping Delta State in a doubleheader on Friday night, winning game one 2-0 before taking game two 14-6.
In game one, MC put themselves ahead in the top of the third inning, after Jaycee Dill hit a home run to left field, bringing in the first run of the game.
Kamryn Eaton scored on a single hit to left field by Alexis Laughlin, bringing in the second and final run of the game. Mississippi College went on to win by a final of 2-0.
In the second game, Delta State's Taylor hit a single to center field, droving in Helms, giving Delta State an early lead.
Jordan Moore hit a single to center field, driving in two runs (Jenna Ergle and McCall Lee) and giving MC the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second.
In the second inning, Kamryn Eaton hit a home run to center field, extending MC's lead to 3-1. It was her 16th home run of the season after breaking the school record for most home runs in a season last weekend. McCall Lee hit another home run in the same inning and drove in three runs, bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of MC.
Delta State's Coffey hit a home run to center field, driving in three runs and bringing the score to 6-4 in the fourth inning.
However, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Shelby Samples hit a triple to right field, driving in Alexis Laughlin, bringing the Lady Choctaws lead to 7-4. Lee hit a single to right field, driving in Samples and bringing the score to 8-4.
Moore helped add to the lead with a single to center field, driving in Emily Rigney and extending MC's lead to 9-4.
In the fifth inning, Delta State's Pevey hit a home run to center field, driving in two runs and bringing Delta State's score to 9-6, yet MC responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Laughlin hit a single and drove in Hannah Tauzin, bringing the score to 10-6.
With bases loaded, Brooke Fagan walked, driving in Laughlin as MC took the 11-6 lead. Lee hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Jaycee Dill and bringing the score to 12-6, before an Jenna Ergle double to center field gave MC the 14-6 fifth inning win over Delta State as MC clinched the series 2-0.
In game one, Camryn Bailey (22-4) picked up the win, her 22nd of the season after pitching a complete shutout. She pitched all seven innings, allowing only three hits and no runs while striking out three batters.
In game two, Avery Barnett (14-4) picked up the win, her 14th of the season finishing the game with 5.0 innings pitched. She allowed just five earned runs while striking out three batters,
MC improved to 39-8 overall and 23-6 in GSC play with the wins. The Lady Choctaws earned a new school record for most wins in a regular season with 39 wins overall, as well as GSC wins in a regular season with 23 GSC wins.
The two teams will play the final regular season tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the MC Softball Complex with senior day festivities beginning at 10:30 a.m.
