CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- #23 Mississippi College continues to rack up wins in 2023, defeating Lee on Saturday in game three by a final of 10-8 to clinch the GSC series.
The win secured the Lady Choctaws fourth straight GSC series as the nationally ranked program moved to 12-3 overall in GSC play.
In the first inning of the Saturday's game,
Brooke Fagan continued her impressive offensive play of the weekend with an RBI double to right centerfield that scored
Alexis Laughlin, giving MC the early 1-0 lead of the contest.
Lee tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning yet a
Kamryn Eaton single to left field in the second inning helped push MC back up to a 2-1 lead. Fagan once again helped aid the Lady Choctaws to producing more runs, crushing a solo home run over the center field wall, her third home run of the weekend and ninth of the season, to make it a 3-1 MC lead.
The Lady Flames took their first lead of the afternoon with a third inning grand slam to make it a 5-3 Lady Flames lead. Eaton drove in an RBI in the fourth inning on a sacrfice hit to right field, scoring
Shelby Samples as MC cut it to a 5-4 Lady Flames lead.
Lee scored runs in the fifth and sixth inning, along with MC scoring on a
Kamryn Eaton RBI single to left field, making it an 8-5 game with Lee holding onto the three run advantage.
Trailing in the top of the seventh, MC exploded offensively in the inning, scoring five runs, including back-to-back home runs by
Jenna Ergle and
Jordan Moore to make it an 8-7 game at the time.
An RBI bunt by
Kamryn Eaton scored
Jordan LaFosse, tying the game up at 8-8, before taking a two run lead to close out the inning on an RBi ground out by
Alexis Laughlin - scoring Samples from third - as well as an RBI double by
Brooke Fagan, scoring Eaton. MC took the 10-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Avery Barnett (6-3) shutdown the Lady Flames in the bottom half of the inning, picking up her 6th win of the season after going 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and only three hits given up.
Fagan and Eaton led the way with three hits a piece along with three runs batted in each.
Jordan Moore,
Jordan LaFosse,
Shelby Samples, and
Jaycee Dill each had two hits.
MC improved to 24-5 overall on the season and 12-3 in GSC play with the win. The Lady Choctaws return to the diamond next weekend at home versus AUM. The two teams will play a three game GSC series with doubleheader action on Saturday, April 1 beginning with game one at 2 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex. Game three will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.
