CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College took game one of this weekend's Gulf South Conference series with West Alabama, winning by a final score of 3-2.
In possibly the weekend's most exciting series, featuring the top of the conference West Alabama Lady Tigers and the Lady Choctaws, it was UWA that struck first with an RBI single to left field, taking an early 1-0 lead.Â
Two innings later, a solo home run by LP Trammel for UWA gave the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top half of the fourth inning.Â
Yet, the Lady Choctaws got a lift in the fourth inning, with runners at first and second, as
Jenna Ergle sent a Madison Wright (9-4) pitch over the centerfield wall, putting MC on top 3-2.Â
With two hits a piece in the game through four innings, neither team could muster up much of an offensive attack for the remaining innings of the contest, as
Camryn Bailey and Wright continued to go head-to-head with one another in the circle for the duration of the contest.Â
It was Bailey who won the battle in the end, going the full distance, earning 11 strikeouts, only four hits given up, and just two runs surrendered in 7.0 innings pitched.
The freshman picked up the win, her eleventh on the season as she improved to 11-1 in the circle. MC had just three hits as a team with Ergle pacing the way with the three-run home run.
McCall Lee had one hit in which she turned in a double, while
Alexis Laughlin added a single.
MC improves to 17-4 overall on the season and 5-2 in GSC play. UWA falls to 16-5 and 8-2 in the conference. Both teams meet tomorrow for doubleheader action beginning at 1 and 3 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
