Lady Choctaws Move to GSC Semis With Victory Over VSU

Clinton, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team defeated Valdosta State 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference Tournament quarterfinals.

The first half, and majority of the second, saw both team's defenses shine brightly. In the first 45, MC was only able to produce one shot on target while the Blazers only mustered two. Seven total shots were recorded from both teams in the first half to enter into the break scoreless. Until the 80th minute of the match, the score stayed the same but the offense started to rise for the Lady Choctaws, recording five shots with one on target in the time span, but something had to budge for MC to win.

In the 80th minute, MaryElla White found herself open space outside the box and delivered a 25-yard strike into the top left corner past an outstretched VSU keeper for the Lady Choctaws to take the 1-0 lead. It was the senior's second goal of the season and by far most important as the MC defense held on for the remaining 10 minutes and, in fact, did not allow a single VSU shot for the remainder of the match.

The win marks the second time that MC has defeated Valdosta State at home this season, as they won 2-1 back on October 8th. For Jessi Carro in net for the Choctaws, she made four saves on the match, including a full extension save in the first half to keep the match scoreless. The match was the sixth time this season that Carro recorded a clean sheet.

Up next is the GSC Tournament semifinals where tne Lady Choctaws will play the winner of Lee and West Georgia. The semifinal match will take place on Thursday, November 9th in Huntsville, Ala. at John Hunt Park Championship Field. The semifinal match for MC will kick off at 6 p.m. CT.
