Choctaws Stumble at No. 16 West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team in fell in straight sets in Gulf South Conference for the first time this season as it was swept by the 16th-ranked University of West Florida on Tuesday, Oct. 31 in the UWF Field House.
 
Lydia Paulette paced the offensive effort for the Blue and Gold as she tallied seven kills. Caroline Chastang and Rhaia Davey each added five kills while Julia Sumrall supplied four. Ali Wiggins directed the offensive effort with 12 assists. The Enterprise, Ala., native added a team-best nine digs to her ledger.
 
At the net, Sloane FitzHenry compiled four blocks, including the lone solo block of the night for the visitors from the Magnolia State. Paulette joined the block effort with three blocks.
 
In all three sets the Choctaw held their own and grabbed advantages over the perennial, conference power. However, the Argonauts managed to string together decisive runs to gain the upper hand and eventually walk away with the sweep to remain unbeaten in conference play.
 
In the opening set, MC grabbed a 12-10 lead, but witnessed the Blue and Green post a 9-2 run to take a 19-14 advantage en route to a 25-19 victory. Similarly, in the second frame, the Choctaw held a slim 10-8 margin, but an 8-1 scoring run, again, gave the Argonauts a five-point advantage. MC narrowed the deficit to three points late, but the UWF rattled off the final six points to gain a 25-16 win.
 
In the third, the Blue and Gold used a 3-0 run as it rallied from down 16-14 to gain a one-point advantage. UWF responded with a 6-1 spurt to take a four-point margin. MC looked to respond and pulled within 23-20, but a Emily Breazeale kill followed by a Izabella Sanchez service ace secured the match victory.      
 
MC, which managed 27 kills on the night, hit just .117 on the night while the Argonauts posted a .278 clip and accumulated 43 kills.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 2 as it hosts Union University in GSC action. The Choctaws look to avenge a four-set, setback in the Volunteer State earlier this season to the Red and White. First serve is at 6 p.m.
