Choctaw Top West Georgia in Four Sets

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team claimed a four-set victory over the University of West Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Gulf South Conference action. The win snapped a four-match slide to the Wolves (11-7, 5-4 GSC) on their home floor. MC (8-9, 7-3 GSC) has won the last two outings in the series.

Lydia Paulette and Sloane FitzHenry continue to move up the career lists in the Choctaw record books. Paulette registered 13 kills in the match to move to third all-time in the category as she has 779 during her three seasons in Clinton. Her 13 kills, which matched Caroline Chastang for tops on the team in the match, becomes her 15th of the season and 39th of her career.

Chastang has totaled 13 matches this season in double figure kills and the 30th of her two-year stint in Clinton. The Yellowhammer State duo were joined in double-digit kills by Julia Sumrall. The Jackson, Miss., native standout tallied a career-high 10 kills in the match. The former Jackson Prep standout's previous high was nine set against the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Nov. 3, 2022.

FitzHenry recorded her 12th solo block on the campaign and stands third in the program's history in the category. The Houston, Texas, native has totaled 67 during her tenure in the Blue and Gold. She now has 211 total blocks in her career, which is fourth all-time. The senior is one of three Choctaws to compile two blocks in the affair as Sumrall and Cydney Mitchell joined in.

Ali Wiggins directed the offense as she dished out 26 assists in the win. It matches her career-high set earlier this season at Auburn University at Montgomery earlier this month. It is also her 13th career match with 20-plus assists and 10th on the campaign. Caylin Pixley totaled 12 dimes to join the Enterprise, Ala., product in double figures.

The Choctaw looked for their third straight-sets win of the season – all coming in conference play – with identical 25-22 victories in the first two frames, but the Blue and Red derailed the opportunity with a 27-25 victory in the third set.

MC thwarted the Wolves' attempt to send the match to five sets as it slammed the door with a 25-18 win in the fourth set. UWG jumped out to a big lead at the beginning of the set, but the Blue and Gold rallied to knot the set at 13-all behind a solo block from Sumrall. The rejection sparked a 12-5 Choctaw run to close the frame. Paulette ended the contest with a kill off an assist from Pixley.

Mississippi College returns to action Friday, Oct. 20 as it travels to Orlando, Fla., for the NCAA Division II South Region Crossover with the Sunshine State Conference. The event, which is in eighth season, will be held at the Game Point Events Center. Tickets for the event are $25 for an event pass and $15 for daily admission.
