CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team opened the 2023 portion of its schedule with a 57-36 setback to Delta State University on Monday, Jan. 2. MC moves to 3-11 on the season and 2-9 in Gulf South Conference action. DSU improves to 7-8 and 6-5 in the league.

Carley Hudspeth led the Choctaw with a season-high eight points off the bench.
Karly Ivy added six points to finish second on the team.
Mya Bobo paced the squad on the glass with seven rebounds – a career-high for the Saltillo, Miss., native.

MC was held to just 22.6 percent from the field, including going just 2-for-15 from behind the arc. The Blue and Gold hit 10-of-20 from the charity stripe in the contest and collected 31 rebounds. It is the 11th game on the campaign with 30-plus boards.

Camryn Davis led the Green and White as she provided a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds – both team bests. Ginny Higginbotham joined Davis in double figures with 12 points. DSU shot 46.7 percent from the field, including a clip of 42.9 from the 3-point line.

The Statesmen shot 70.6 percent from the free throw line and grabbed 43 rebounds. It is just the third time an MC opponent has totaled 40-plus rebounds in a game this season.

MC scored the first point of the game as Bobo connected on the front end of a pair of free throws 21 seconds into the game, but found itself trailing 16-9 after the first 10 minutes of play. Â The Lady Statesmen grabbed their double-digit lead less than three minutes into the second quarter and never looked back. DSU grabbed its largest lead with 13 seconds left in the game.

Mississippi College returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 as it travels to Carrollton, Ga., for a GSC contest. Tip-off against the University of West Georgia is set for 6:30 p.m. central.
