CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College women's soccer team defeated Alabama-Huntsville on Friday afternoon (Sept. 23rd) by a score of 5-2.
Beatrice Currie scored two goals for MC, while
Caroline Naman,
Olivia Gelpi, and
Eduarda Silva added goals as well. The #19 ranked Lady Choctaws improved to 6-2 (3-1 GSC) on the season, while UAH fell to 1-5-2 (0-3-1 GSC). MC led 5-0 in the match before UAH scored two late goals.
Caroline Naman got the scoring started for MC in the 9th minute as she scored from the edge of the box on an assist from
Avery Hederman. Hederman played the ball to Naman, who dribbled around a defender before putting the ball past the keeper. The goal is the second of the season for Naman (she has now scored in two straight matches).
Beatrice Currie then scored her first goal of the afternoon on a counter shortly after Naman's in the 10th minute.
Avery Hederman played the ball long to Currie who got past the UAH backline, and got on the end of it. She then was able to beat the goalkeeper in a 1v1 situation to double MC's lead to 2-0.
Olivia Gelpi then extended MC's lead to 3-0 in the 26th minute. UAH had a goal kick, but the ball was quickly won back by MC. Gelpi got into the box and past the defense to slot the ball home. The goal marked her first of the season.
Eduarda Silva then added her second goal in as many matches in the 35th minute. Silva received the ball in the box, cut around a defender, and then put the ball in the net to give MC a 4-0 lead heading into the half. The goal is the second of the season for Silva.
In the 1st half, the Lady Choctaws outshot 20-5. MC also held a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Currie then added her second goal of the contest in the 64th minute to push MC's lead to 5-0. Currie powered into the box working her past defenders before scoring. Currie now has seven goals on the season, good for second on the team.
The Chargers would add two late goals to trim the deficit to three before the final whistle. Emily Labus scored in the 72nd minute after she put a rebound in the net. Maialen Mera Torres then converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to make it the ultimately final score of 5-2.
Overall for the match, MC outshot the Chargers 29-12. MC held a 19-6 edge in shots on goal.
