CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College women's soccer team opened up their home slate with a dominant 3-0 win over Lynn University on Friday afternoon (Sept. 2). MC improved to 2-1 on the year with the win, while Lynn fell to 1-2.
Avery Hederman,
Erin Hederman, and
Kathryn Knuth scored the goals for Lady Choctaws.
Avery Hederman got the scoring started in the 16th minute as she converted a Penalty Kick to put MC up 1-0. To set up the penalty,
Erin Hederman played the ball forward to
Margherita Giubilato who had gotten past the Lynn backline. Giubilato then drew the foul in the box as she cut back to set up the PK for
Avery Hederman. On the PK itself, Avery put the ball in the right side of the net for the goal. Lynn's keeper guessed right, but wasn't able to get far enough on her dive to reach it. The goal marked
Avery Hederman's second of the season.
The Hederman sisters then connected in the 29th minute to double MC's lead to 2-0.
Avery Hederman had the ball in the midfield, and then played a perfectly placed through-ball to
Erin Hederman who had made a run to get past the Fighting Knights defense. She then cut back and put a shot in the back of the net to beat Lynn's keeper. The goal marked the first of the season for
Erin Hederman.
MC would see out the first half from there and take the 2-0 lead into the break. In the first half, MC outshot Lynn 16-6 and held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
The second half was much of the same for the Lady Choctaws in terms of control.
Kathryn Knuth got the eventual dagger goal for MC in the 75th minute to make it the ultimately final scoreline of 3-0. Giubilato had played a cross into the box for Knuth. Knuth got her head on it and sent it towards the goal, but it hit off the crossbar and bounced into the air. The rebound fell for Knuth, and she was able to gather the ball and put it into the back of the net for her first career goal.
Overall for the match, MC outshot Lynn 31-10. The Lady Choctaws also held a 15-4 edge in shots on goal (shutting out Lynn in the second half in that category). MC also led the way in the corner kick category as well, 10-3.
In net for the Lady Choctaws,
Anna Wes Driskell made four saves in her first career start.
Next up, MC will stay at home to host Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday morning (Sept. 4) at 11:00 am.
