ROME, GA.--- The Mississippi College women's soccer team dominated Shorter University 8-0 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18). Six different Lady Choctaws scored, led by
Erin Hederman and
Beatrice Currie who scored two goals apiece.
Caroline Naman,
Stella French,
Eduarda Silva, and
Jaelyn Evans all scored goals as well. MC improved to 5-2 (2-1 GSC) on the year, while Shorter fell to 0-8-1 (0-4 GSC).
MC started out quickly as
Erin Hederman converted a penalty kick in the 5th minute. She drew the foul, and then stepped up to put it home herself to give the Lady Choctaws the early lead.
Hederman the doubled MC's lead in the 14th minute. She received a pass at the edge of the box from
Olivia Gelpi, and dribbled around a defender before putting a shot in that beat Shorter's keeper to make it 2-0. The brace on the afternoon gives Hederman 8 goals on the season.
Caroline Naman then added to MC's lead in the 28th minute. She received a pass from
Erin Hederman and put it past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0. The goal is Naman's first of the season.
Stella French then also scored her first goal of the season to push the lead to 4-0.
Eduarda Silva played a low cross in across the goal, and French put it home from the back post in the 33rd minute.
Beatrice Currie capped off the first half with a goal right before the break in the 44th minute.
Kathryn Knuth played a cross in to Currie who took a touch before slotting it in the back of the net to put MC up 5-0 heading into halftime.
In the first half, the Lady Choctaws outshot Shorter 14-0 and held a commanding 12-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Currie then added her second goal of the contest in the 49th minute as the 2nd half started much as the first. This time around, Currie put in an expert finish over the keeper the push MC's lead to 6-0. Currie now has 5 goals on the season.
Eduarda Silva then scored her first career goal in the 64th minute. She made a long run into the box with the ball, and then beat the keeper to push the lead to 7-0.
Jaelyn Evans then capped off the scoring in the 71st minute to push the lead to the ultimately final 8-0. Evans skied up to head home a cross for her first career goal.
Overall, MC outshot Shorter 20-0, and had an 18-0 edge in shots on goal.
Next up, the Lady Choctaws will return home to host Alabama-Huntsville (Friday, Sept. 23rd) and West Alabama (Sunday, Sept. 25th) next weekend.
