Volleyball's Streak Snapped at Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team took its unblemished record on the road on Friday, Sept. 16 in Gulf South Conference action at the University of Montevallo. However, the Choctaws (10-1, 1-1 GSC) had their streak snapped in three sets at Trustmark Arena.

The 10-0 record matched the best start in program history, which was set by the 1994 edition.

Lydia Paulette led the Navy and Gold offensively with a team-best 10 kills. MC totaled 28 kills on the night. It's the sixth time this season the Tuscaloosa, Ala., product has led the team in kills and her fourth time in double figures.

Lexie Laurendine paced the squad with 14 of the team's 25. The Clinton, Miss., senior added three kills and also helped lead the charge defensively as she recorded a team-leading seven digs. It's her seventh time leading the team in assists on the campaign and her second in the dig column.

Adi Kizer and Julia Sumrall combined for four blocks to assist in the defensive effort.

UM (9-4, 1-0 GSC) opened the match with a 25-16 victory in the first set. It marked just the second time this season the Navy and Gold fell in the opening set of a match – the first coming in a 21-25 setback at Rollins College.

MC attempted to rally and deadlock the contest in the second set as the two exchanged leads. The Choctaw climbed within 23-22 late in the set behind a Kendall Platt kill and a Laurendine service ace, but the homestanding Falcons snapped the run with a kill from Allie Dishman and closed the set out on an MC miscue. The Purple and Gold rode the momentum into the final set as it captured the set and the match with a 25-20 victory in the third.

The setback is the first for the Choctaw since the GSC Tournament Semifinal to the University of West Florida on Nov. 20, 2021.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as it travels to Huntsville, Ala., for a conference contest against the University of Alabama in Huntsville. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
