Choctaws Fall to Montevallo 5-2 in Wild Clash

CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team fell to Montevallo 5-2 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 11th). Noah Wagner scored for MC with the other goal coming from a Montevallo own-goal. Five of the goals scored in the match came in the final 20 minutes. MC falls to 3-2 (0-2 GSC), while Montevallo improves to 2-0-3 (1-0 GSC).

The Choctaws went ahead early in the 8th minute with a Penalty Kick. Montevallo was attempting to clear the ball away when one of their players committed a hand-ball in the box. Noah Wagner stepped up and put home the PK to give the Choctaws the lead.

Montevallo then equalized in the 19th minute. The Falcons had a corner, and the ball started pin-balling around in the box. Simon Wittman then got on the end of it and put it in to draw even at 1-1.

That scoreline would remain for the remainder of the 1st half. In the opening 45, MC outshot Montevallo 6-5 and both teams had three shots on goal apiece.

Neither team was able to get going in the opening part of the 2nd half. Then came the chaotic final 20 minutes of the match which featured five goals, two missed penalty kicks, and five bookings.

Julio Rojo Buhler broke the tie in the 73rd minute as he scored from the edge of the box to put the Falcons ahead 2-1.

The Choctaws then had a chance to equalize in the 73rd minute with another penalty kick attempt. This time however, Wagner's attempt was missed and the score would remain 2-1.

Montevallo would then double their lead right after in the 74th minute. Montevallo drew a free kick about 35 yards out. The ball was played in, and Brock Barbee was able to get his foot on it from the back post and put it home to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Choctaws would quickly get a goal back however, as they trimmed the lead to 3-2 after a Montevallo own-goal in the 75th minute. Wagner was dribbling the ball and a defender attempted to clear the ball out for a corner, but it went in the net instead to trim into the lead.

The Falcons would then double their lead right back to two however as they this time picked up a penalty kick. A foul in the box led to Julio Rojo Buhler converting the PK and extending Montevallo's lead to 4-2 in the 81st minute.

MC would once again have chances in the final ten minutes. That included another MC penalty kick attempt, this time from Nico Milot, which was saved by the Falcons' keeper in the 84th minute.

Montevallo would then score the dagger on a breakaway in the 89th minute. MC had sent everyone, except goalkeeper Cole Turner, into the box for a corner, but it was cleared away by Montevallo. The Falcons were then able to get past Turner in the midfield and Gabrielle Valerio was able to score to make the score the ultimately final score of 5-2.

Overall for the match, MC outshot Montevallo 18-15. The Falcons however held the edge in shots on goal 11-8.

Next up, MC will travel to take on Lee University on Friday evening (Sept. 16th).
