MC Falls to Nationally Ranked Columbus State

COLUMBUS, GA.--- The Mississippi College women's soccer team fell to #15 Columbus State 6-0 on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28) in Columbus, Ga. MC fell to 1-1, while Columbus State improved to 2-0.

CSU jumped out in front early with a goal from Olivia Roth in the 13th minute. The Cougar lead was then doubled several minutes later on an own goal from the Lady Choctaws in the 18th minute. 

The match stayed even for the next 20 minutes with MC trying to get a goal back before halftime, but it was Columbus State who would find the back of the net twice more in the final minutes of the half to take a 4-0 lead into the break. Emma Beddow scored in the 41st minute and Anna Labarbera scored in the 42nd minute.

CSU then scored their final two goals of the match early in the 2nd half. Rachael Sweigard converted a penalty kick, and then she scored again in the 53rd minute to give Columbus State the ultimately final 6-0 lead. No goals were scored in the final 36 minutes of the match.

Overall, CSU outshot MC 17-12 in the match and held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Margherita Giubilato led the way for MC in shots with three. Kathryn Knuth also added two shots, with both being on goal to lead the team in that category. 

Four Lady Choctaws made their MC debuts in the match. Bibi Joo, Emily DoyleAnna Wes Driskell, and Kate Strickland all made their first appearances for MC in the match.

Next up, MC will have their first home matches of the season next weekend as they host Lynn University on Friday at 3:00 pm, and then Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday at 11:00 am. After that, the Lady Choctaws will head into Gulf South Conference play.
