Tennis Closes Out Action Packed Weekend in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Mississippi College tennis program capped off an eventful weekend in Pensacola versus Valdosta State and West Florida on the courts.

Mississippi College on the women's side picked up the 1-0 point versus Valdosta State in doubles play, with Ely Alas/Fernada Cota and Emma Roberts/Maria Rodriquez picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Emma Roberts and Fernanda Cota were stellar in singles play, picking up wins for MC with Roberts winning at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, while Cota won 6-3, 6-2.

MC fell 4-3 to Valdosta State on the afternoon in a close matchup. On the men's side, Brady McDaniel / Hsiang Yi Wang picked up the lone win for the Choctaws, in doubles play, winning their set 6-2 and No. 2 doubles, yet was not enough as Valdosta State picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to gain the 1-0 lead. Valdosta State went on to sweep the Choctaws, 7-0.

Versus West Florida, the Lady Choctaws fell by a final of 4-3, as MC picked up the doubles point, with a 6-3 win by Ely Alas/Fernanda Cota at No. 1 doubles before Anna Valiaeva/Anna Didkovska won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Emma Roberts won 7-5, 7-5 versus Mayumi Saguchi at No. 3 singles, as the Lady Choctaws ultimately fell to West Florida.

On the men's side, UWF swept MC in all three doubles sets to take the 1-0 lead. In singles, MC got wins at No. 3 singles by Hsiang Yi Wang (Def. Bernardo Costa, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0) and Carlos Truijillo at No. 4 singles (7-6, 7-6).

UWF went on to win the match, defeating MC by a final of 5-2. MC falls to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in GSC play while the women fall to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in GSC play.

MC returns to action on Saturday at Montevallo, with the two teams set to go head-to-head beginning at 10 a.m. in Montevallo, Ala.
