CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team returned to win the column with a 3-0 win over the University of Montevallo on Thursday, April 15. MC improved to 13-25 on the season and 7-15 in the conference. UM fell to 28-11 and 12-9 in the league.
Â
The victory snapped a seven-game, GSC skid for the Navy and Gold, but gives the program its fourth straight win in the series and fifth overall. The blanking is the second this season for the team as it shutout then-No. 16 Henderson State University on March 15. It's the first shutout in conference play since an 11-0 victory in the series finale against the University of West Georgia on April 3, 2021.
Â
Gavin LeBlanc (2-2) picked up his second win the of the season as he struck out a season-high seven batters in eight innings, which is his longest outing of the season. He allowed just five hits and gave up one walk. The seven punch-outs are the second most this season and one shy of matching the high set by
Joseph Cuomo on Feb. 25 against Christian Brothers University.
Â
Cooper Gadman (2) tossed the final frame to earn his second save of the campaign as he allowed one hit and struck out one in the relief appearance. The save places the Brandon, Miss., product in the top spot on the team.
Â
Cody Crifasi led the team at the dish with a pair of hits – the only multiple-hit performance of the contest.
Caleb Reese and
CJ Berry each logged a hit with
Lane Willis and
Jackson Breedlove each drove in a run.
Â
MC plated all the runs it needed in the fourth frame. Crifasi became the first run of the contest as he scored a fielding error by the Falcons' third baseman, which allowed Tigrett to reach. The Brandon, Miss., native later scored on a double play to extend the lead. Crifasi became the final run of the game as he crossed the dish in the eighth on a
Markarius Lee sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Â
The Choctaws drew seven walks in the contest, which is tied for second most this season and three short of the season-high 10 set at West Alabama earlier this season.
Â
Mississippi College and Montevallo finish out the conference series on Friday, April 14. First of the doubleheader is 1 p.m.
