STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men and women's track and field program took to the Division I ranks on Saturday, competing at the Mississippi State Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss.
On the women's side,
Jazmin Hernandez got things started off successfully for the Lady Choctaws, finishing runner-up in the Women's 1500m with a time of 4:35.11.
In the same race,
Kathy Hammond totaled a 4:45.87 in her 1500m debut at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relay, securing a Top 5 finish for Mississippi College.
The Choctaws got it done in the field as well, with
Sakari Faulkner throwing a personal record in the Shot Put with a mark of 11.38m.
Tytavia Hardy had a stellar day, becoming the first woman in Mississippi College history to finish with a sub 14 in the 100 meter hurdles, setting a school record with a 13.88 time. Tytavia's time had her place fourth overall in the event with a stacked field full of Division one talent she was running against.
The women were not the only ones making waves on Saturday, as the men also had a spectacular day in Starkville.
Cole Benoit absolutely handled business in the men's 1500 meter, setting a personal record with a time of 3:50.05.
Finishing behind Benoit,
Brock Kelly ran a 3:58.29 which allowed Kelly to place 11th overall in the event. Two more Choctaws placed within the top-25 with
Braedon Methvin crossing the finish line with a time of 4:04.88, good for 17th overall, as
Hollis Johnson ran a 4:08.13, which was good for 22nd overall on the leaderboard.
The Choctaws did not finish there, as
Shemar Patten finished 5th in the Men's 100m with a time of 10.60 before winning his heat in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.43, good for an NCAA Provo mark time.
Wesley Gibbs also notched an NCAA provo mark time of 1:51.41, including a personal best, on his way to winning his heat with
Jake Russell finishing directly behind him with a time of 1:52.32. In heat two,
Gabe Hodson came out on top, winning with a time of 1:56.28.
In the field,
Al Ferrill continued to shine for the Choctaws, setting a personal best as well as a new school record with a mark of 16.16 meters in the men's shot put.
Mississippi College closed out the weekend with a season best time of 3:16.88 in the Mens 4x4, an event that included, Hodson running a first lap time of 48.97, Grames with a 48.47 time, Gibbs running the 400 in a time of 50.18, while Russell closed out the final lap with a time of 48.71.
Both programs took care of business, putting on display their talent in a stacked field at the Mississippi State Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays, competing at the highest level versus a plethora of Division I talent.
MC returns to action next weekend at the Southern Miss invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Choctaws will get started early with the event taking place on the campus of Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss.
