Women's Hoops Campaign Ends at GSC Tournament

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball teams' 2021-22 campaign came to end on Tuesday, March 1 as the Choctaws (15-13) fell 77-54 to Lee (Tenn.) University in the Quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. LU improves to 23-6 and advances to the tournament semifinals in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend.
 
The 15 victories are the most for the Navy and Gold since returning to Division II and the most wins since the 2011-12 campaign. The Choctaws finished garnered a 16-10 mark during that season.
 
"I am proud of the grit and fight this team has shown all season," said head coach Greg Long. "We didn't get the result we wanted tonight, but this game and season have placed us on the right path and we will only get better from here. We want to thank our fans for their support all season. You have been tremendous."

Amelia Bell led the way for the Navy and Gold in the contest as the freshman collected her third double-double during her debut season. The O'Fallon, Ill., native totaled a team-best 10 points and led the way on the glass with 12 rebounds.
 
The Choctaws stood tied at 30-all following the first 20 minutes of action, but outscored 47-24 during the second half.
 
MC held the advantage in points in the paint as it outscored the Lady Flames 36-28 in the category and got 28 points from the bench compared to the Lee's 23 points. However, LU used 20 Choctaw miscues and converted them into 21 points. MC totaled just nine points off turnovers.
 
The Choctaws shot 35.6 percent from the field in the season finale, but struggled from behind the arc as it converted on just 1-of-11 and were 11-for-18 from the charity stripe for 61.1 percent. MC held the advantage on the glass at 40-33.
 
Halle Hughes and Haley Schubert led Lee with 17 points each. Hannah Garrett added 11 points while Camryn Grant paced the squad on the glass with seven rebounds. The Lady Flames shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including a 43.5 clip from the 3-point line, and was 9-for-17 from the free-throw line for 52.9 percent.
 
Mississippi College improved from three wins during the 2020-21 campaign to 15 in the second year under head coach Greg Long.
