Softball Blasts Its Away to Opening Day Wins Against St. Leo and North Georgia

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Mississippi College Choctaws opened the 2022 season with two huge wins at the Gulf Shores Invitational, winning game one over Saint Leo University by a final score of 4-2 and game two over #5 North Georgia by a final of 17-6. 

Mississippi College improved to 2-0 to begin the season with Saturday's wins. MC returns to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. versus Nova Southeastern and again at 11:15 a.m. versus Columbus State.

Game One | Mississippi College 4 | Saint Leo 2 
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning to St. Leo, MC's Alexis Laughlin got things started off early with a lead off hit by pitch. The next at bat, Brooke Fagan drove in the Choctaws first run of the night, scoring Laughlin to put the Choctaws on the board at 1-1 with St. Leo. 

With Fagan standing at second after an RBI double, Jenna Ergle made it back to back RBI's for the Choctaws, this time with a moonshot homerun to give MC the 3-1 lead. 

St. Leo trimmed the Choctaws lead down to 3-2 with a top of the sixth inning run yet MC answered in the bottom half of the sixth with a McCall Lee RBI to score Jordan Lafosse as MC retook a two-run, 4-2, lead over St. Leo. 

Avery Barnett closed out the seventh inning, giving her the complete game win in the circle as MC went on to take the win 4-2. Barnett (1-0) had a stellar outing, finishing with the complete game, while only surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits. She struggled struck out four total batters on the afternoon in a total of 29 batters faced.

As a team, MC collected six total hits for six different individuals. Jenna Ergle finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a two-run home that shifted the momentum in the direction of MC. 

Brooke Fagan went 1-for-3 at the plate with aa double, RBI, and one run scored. Rayne Minor, Lafosse, AnneMarie Peavy, and Carlon Brabham each tallied one hit in the win.
