Choctaws Fall in Season Opener

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opened the 2022 campaign with a 12-4 setback to 31st-ranked North Greenville University on Friday, Feb. 4.

MC totaled just four hits in the contest while the Crusaders collected 15 hits in the contest, including 13 singles and used eight walks to bolster their run total. The Navy and Gold garnered doubles with Caleb Reese and Derrek Lathon, Jr., while Tristan Tigrett and Cody Crifasi each recorded base knocks.

Pat Monteith led a quintet of Crusaders with multiple hits as he notched three on the day with two runs scored.

The Crusaders jumped on the board early as they plated a pair of runs off a John Michael Faile two-run home run in the top of the first. The Choctaws kept the deficit to just two runs until the Red and Black posted a four spot in the fourth and followed with three more in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead.

MC added all of its runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Reese led off the frame with a double and later swiped third following a Kolby McWilliams' walk. Tigrett pushed the first Choctaw run across the board with a single that scored Reese.

Following a Lane Willis walk, McWilliams scored on a fielder's choice and later Tigrett scored on a balk by Crusaders' hurler Grayson Hickert. John Rice became the final run of the inning as he scored on a throwing error.

NGU concluded the scoring in the top of the eighth as it plated three insurance runs.

Joseph Cuomo (0-1) was saddled with the decision on the mound. He allowed six runs on seven hits in his MC debut. He struck out one and walked one in 3.2 innings of action.
