Women's Basketball Celebrates Successful Senior Day

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team secured a season sweep of Auburn University at Montgomery with a 75-65 victory on Senior Night. MC improved to 14-11 on the season and 9-9 in Gulf South Conference play. AUM fell to 6-17 and 1-16 in the league.

The 14 wins are the most since returning to Division II and the most since the 2011-12 campaign.
 
A trio of Choctaws scored in double figures led by Kyiah Julian with a season-high 19 points. The Greenwood, Ark., native finished one-point shy of tying her career-high set at Union on Jan. 22, 2021. Freshmen Ally Alford and Amelia Bell each chimed in 11 points. Bell also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
 
MC shot 33.9 percent from the field and connected on 29-of-41 from the charity stripe for 70.7 percent. The Choctaws also held the advantage on the glass with 48 rebounds to the Warhawks 35.
 
Despite trailing by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, in large part to a 22-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play, the Navy and Gold outscored AUM by nearly 20 points in the final three quarters, including 12 points in the second half.
 
The Warhawks held a 32-21 advantage midway through the second quarter, but MC closed the final four minutes of the period out on an 11-2 run to close within two points at the intermission. The Navy and Gold kept the pressure on as it started the second half as it grabbed its first lead since early in the first quarter on back-to-back buckets from Julian. The Choctaws advantage swelled to as much as 55-46 at the end of the third. AUM pulled within four points on a couple different occasions during the final period, but the never drew closer. Senior Jay Levy gave MC its largest advantage, 10 points, with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
 
Catlin Carter led AUM with 20 points as DeMaurea Moore pulled down eight rebounds. The Orange and Black shot 37.5 percent from the field and posted a 75.0 clip from the free-throw line.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 24 as it travels to Huntsville, Ala., for a rematch with the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Tip-off from Spragins Hall is set for 5:30 p.m.
