Freshmen Lead in Scoring as Choctaw Fall at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- A pair of freshmen led the team in scoring as Mississippi College dropped its third consecutive contest, a 76-57 setback at Auburn University at Montgomery on Sunday, Dec. 4. MC moves to 2-7 and 1-5 in Gulf South Conference action while the Warhawks improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Ava Knoedl and Brett Gardner teamed up to pace the squad. Knoedl scored a season-high 11 points off the bench to guide the offensive effort. Her previous high was six points against Tuskegee University on Nov. 12. Gardner added nine points for her second-highest scoring effort of the season and missing her second double figure contest on the campaign. The duo also led the team in assists with two dimes each.

Danielle Tennant led the charge on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds. The total replaces her previous high of five against Tuskegee earlier this season. MC pulled down a season-high 44 boards in the contest as it recorded its second contest with 40-plus rebounds. It is the seventh time this season the team has outrebounded its opponent as it posted a plus-11 advantage on the glass.

Tennant, a Kingston, Jamaica, native, also registered a block in the contest as the Choctaw tallied a season-high four in the affair. Keller Bigham, Kiersten Hudson and Mya Bobo also participated in the block party. The team's previous high was three in the season opener against LeMoyne-Owen College.

The Blue and Gold shot 34.4 percent from the field, including going 5-for-20 (25.0%) from the 3-point line, and connected on 72.7 percent from the free-throw line.

MC held a 9-6 advantage midway through the first quarter following a pair of free throws from Knoedl, however, the Warhawks closed out the first 10 minutes of action on a 9-2 run to grab a 15-11 lead. AUM expanded its margin as it outscored the Blue and Gold 19-12 in the second period to take a 34-23 advantage into the locker room.

The Orange and Black's lead swelled during the third quarter as it grabbed its largest margin of 23 points with just over a minute to play in the period on a 3-pointer from Kamya Hollingshed, who finished three 3-pointers on the day and tied for tops on the team with 13 points.

Five Warhawks scored in double figures led by Hollingshed and Jamya Tyus with 13 points each as the team shot 45.2 percent from the floor, including a clip of 36.8 from the 3-point line. Jemeriah Moore paced the Black and Orange on the glass with six rebounds. AUM shot 81.3 percent from the charity stripe.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Dec. 9 as it hosts the University of West Alabama. Tip is at 5:30 p.m.
