JACKSON, Miss. --- Mississippi College improved to 5-1 on the season Saturday evening defeating GSC opponent, West Florida, by a final score of 88-68.
The Choctaws jumped out to an early lead in the first two minutes of play with the help of a three-pointer and two jumpers, taking a 7-0 lead right out of the gate.
Over the next four minutes, the Choctaws continued productive offensive play, going on an 8-4 run, extending their lead to 11-points, 15–4.
With two minutes remaining in the first half, Galen Smith knocked down two free throws, giving MC the 42-21 advantage. The Blue and Gold closed out the remaining minutes in control of the scoreboard, heading into the half winning 46-27.
The Argos made a run of their own to begin the second half, trimming the lead down to 11-points with 15:27 remaining in regulation. With stellar MC play, the Choctaws were able to push their lead back to 15 points, leading 70-55, midway through the second half.
With one minute remaining in the contest, guard Blayton Williams knocked down a three-point shot from outside, giving MC a 20-point lead over the Argos.
Mississippi College handed West Florida the loss on Saturday, improving to 5-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Choctaws shot 49% from the field and eclipsed 50% from three-point range, finishing 9-of-18 beyond the arc.
Tradavis Thompson totaled 40 minutes of action, netting a perfect 7-of-7 from three-point range, while leading MC with 27 points. Thompson also had three rebounds and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Paul Smith finished with double-digits, going 8-of-10 from the field with 16 points. Justin Reid had 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and four rebounds.
Galen Smith led the Choctaws with six rebounds and collected 13 points in the win. Miles Miller had a good night with 13 assists and eight points.
The Choctaws return to action on Monday night versus Valdosta State at the A.E. Wood Coliseum. The two teams go head to head beginning at 7:30 p.m. in GSC play.
