Choctaws Fall to West Florida in Regular Season Finale

PENSACOLA, Fla.--- The Mississippi College men's soccer team fell to #15 nationally ranked West Florida 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23rd) to wrap up the regular season. MC will now head into the Gulf South Conference tournament next weekend. The Choctaws fell to 10-3-2 (6-3-2 GSC) for the regular season, while West Florida improved to 10-2-3 (8-0-3 GSC).

The 1st half was very evenly played, and neither team was able to break through in the opening 45.

MC goalkeeper Cole Turner made a big save late in the half to keep the match scoreless headed into the break. The ball was bouncing around in the box, and eventually an Argo shot was put on target while Turner was on the far side of the net. Turner was able to dive back across the goal though to make the save, and send the match into the half 0-0.

In the 1st half, West Florida outshot MC 5-4. The Argonauts also held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.

West Florida was then able to take the lead for good in the 2nd half. Kainan Dos Santos struck first to put UWF ahead in the 57th minute.

West Florida then thought they had found a 2nd goal several minutes later, but the Choctaw backline was able to catch the Argos offsides. The goal was eventually disallowed because of the offsides after a discussion.

Dos Santos was then able to pick up the 2nd goal though to double the lead with a quality finish. He pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 72nd minute.

MC pushed to get goals back in the final minutes, but were unable to find the net. The match ultimately ended with the score 2-0.

Overall for the match, shots were even between the two teams with 11 apiece. West Florida held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Nico Milot led the way for MC with four shots. Four different Choctaws had one shot on goal.

Next up, the Choctaws will head into the GSC tournament. The tournament will open next Sunday (Oct. 30th) with the quarterfinals. The Choctaws seeding, and whether MC will host in the 1st round, is not yet known and will be decided by the remaining matches on the weekend.
