Volleyball Earns First Ever Win at Lee; Improves GSC Win Streak

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team ran its Gulf South Conference win streak to four straight as the Choctaw (19-4, 7-2 GSC) topped Lee University in four sets on Friday, Oct. 21 at Walker Arena.

The win not only improved the Navy and Gold's win streak on the season, but gave the program its fourth straight in the series and the first ever on Lee's home floor – snapping a five-match skid.

Freshman Caroline Chastang led the Choctaw with 14 kills in the match. Sophomore Lydia Paulette joined her Yellowhammer State teammate with double figure kills as the Tuscaloosa native provided 10. Lexie Laurendine and Ali Wiggins directed the offensive attack with 33 combined assists. Laurendine dished out a team-best 21 dimes while Wiggins supplied 12 in return to action.

Sloane FitzHenry posted a threat at the net as she totaled five blocks in the match while a quartet of Choctaw collected double-digit digs led by Missy Beber and Londyn Bakeris with 14 each. Kendall Platt and Laurendine supplied 12 digs each. Platt, Beber and Laurendine assisted on the offensive effort as the trio combined for nine of the teams' 10 service aces.

MC held a 2-0 lead through the first two sets and looked to end the match in straight sets following the intermission, but the Flames had a different idea as they used an 8-0 lead midway through the game to grab an 18-6 advantage. The Choctaw crawled to within 10 points, but the Red and White slammed the door on the set with the final three points to garner a 25-12 victory and force the contest to four sets.

In the final set, MC grabbed an early 3-0 lead and the held the advantage until LU rallied and grasped its first lead of the set at 17-16. The two exchanged a pair of ties and lead changes over the next few points. The Navy and Gold knotted the set at 18-all on a kill from Laurendine – the last tie of the match. The tip sparked a 4-0 run to give MC a 21-18 margin and send the squad on a 7-4, match-clinching run to end the set at 25-22.

The conference win streak stands tied as the second longest in the league following Friday night's action.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 as it continues its road swing with a GSC contest in Rome, Ga. First serve at Shorter University is set for 1 p.m. central.
