CLINTON, Miss.--- The Mississippi College women's soccer team defeated Auburn-Montgomery 4-0 on Tuesday (Oct. 11th). The match was a resumption of the suspended match between the two squads on September 9th.
Beatrice Currie led the way in the match with two goals.
Emma Young and
Caroline Naman both added goals as well. MC improves to 10-2-1 (7-1-1 GSC) on the year, while AUM falls to 2-9-1 (2-6-1 GSC).
MC led 1-0 in the 23rd minute when play was suspended due to lightning on September 9th, and play was unable to continue that day. The match was picked up from that point on Tuesday.
Emma Young scored the first goal of the match back before play was suspended. She scored in the 21st minute on a header from a corner.
Avery Hederman played the ball in and Young skied up to win it and put it home. The goal is Young's first of the season. Play was then suspended several minutes later.
Beatrice Currie then doubled MC's lead in the 30th minute with the first goal of her brace, seven minutes after play was picked back up on October 11th. Currie got on the end of a through ball from
Erin Hederman and slotted it home to push MC's lead to 2-0.
That 2-0 score would remain for the remainder of the 1st half. In the opening 45 minutes, MC outshot AUM 16-3. The Lady Choctaws also held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Currie then extended the lead further with a golazo in the 63rd minute.
Erin Hederman took a shot, but it was deflected and it fell to Currie. Currie then pulled a shot from outside the box, and put into the corner of the net to push the lead to 3-0. Currie's two goals on the afternoon put her at 11 on the season, which now leads the team.
Caroline Naman then put the match away in the 70th minute.
Avery Hederman played a long switch to Naman, who put it home past the keeper to make it a 4-0 score. The goal is Naman's third of the season. MC would see out the match from there, winning by that 4-0 scoreline.
Overall for the match, MC outshot AUM 26-4. The Lady Choctaws also held a 13-2 edge in shots on goal.
Next up, MC will have their final home weekend of the regular season. MC will host Christian Brothers on Friday (Oct. 14th) and then Union on Sunday (Oct. 16th). Senior Day will be on Sunday against Union.
It was also released on Tuesday that the Lady Choctaws are now ranked #25 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. Tuesday's match was not considered in the poll (only matches through Monday, October 10th were considered). Tuesday's match will be taken into account in next week's rankings.
MC is one of three Gulf South Conference teams in the rankings, joining West Florida (#13) and Lee (#18). MC is also the fourth highest ranked team in the South Region. Embry-Riddle (ranked #3 nationally) leads the way, followed by the three GSC squads.
