Choctaws Turn Back Shorter

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball snapped a three-game, Gulf South Conference skid with an 83-58 victory over Shorter University on Saturday, Jan. 22. MC improved to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference. The Hawks fell to 2-10 and 0-9 in league play.
 
The win expanded the Choctaws' win streak to three straight and deadlocked the series at five victories for each team. MC is 5-1 on its home floor against the Hawks.

"I am so happy for the win and its great to be back on the winning side of things. I was proud of the focus we showed coming off a tough loss on Thursday," said head coach Greg Long. "It was awesome having everyone back. Even though the first half was sloppy, I was happy with the effort. Now we have to get through one of the toughest stretch of the season and that starts on the road at West Georgia next Saturday."
 
Six players scored in double figures for the Choctaws – a season-high. Alana Canady led the way for the Navy and Gold with 16 points – one off her season-best. Ally Alford added 13 points with 11 from Kayla Bradley.
 
Tamarah Sykes posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. It marks her second double-double of the season. Amelia Bell and Kyiah Julian each joined Sykes with 10 points.
 
MC shot 54.2 percent from the floor, including a 50.0 clip from behind the arc. The squad connected on 81.3 percent from the charity stripe and grabbed 39 rebounds – 32 coming on the defensive end.
 
The Choctaws held a three-point advantage after the first 10 minutes of action, but reached a double-digit margin at the 4:18 mark of the second quarter on a Canady layup off an assist from Kayla Bradley. The Hawks cut into the deficit and trailed 40-33 at the break.
 
After SU narrowed the lead to within five points early in the third, but the Navy and Gold responded with a 10-1 run to expand its advantage to 50-36 with 4:11 left in the period. The Choctaws maintained the 14-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
 
MC grabbed a 20-point lead with a minute left to play and grabbed its largest advantage with six ticks left on the clock on a layup from Sky Vaughn.
 
Shorter was led by Jasmine Gaines with a game-best 22 points. Kelly Pickett led the team on the glass with seven rebounds. SU shot 33.8 percent from the field, despite a paltry 16.7 clip from the 3-point line. The Blue and White connected on 69.2 percent from the free-throw line.
 
Tip-off in Carrollton, Ga., on Saturday, Jan. 29 is set for 3 p.m.
