BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Mississippi College's Christian Balcer is the Gulf South Conference Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Week Presented by TicketSmarter, as announced by conference office on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
 
The Hurley, Miss., native reset a meet record in the 5,000 meters as he claimed the event crown. Balcer posted a time of 14:55.16 to break Emory University's Jack Whetstone's 2019 time of 15:01.67. He has won each of his collegiate races this season as he claimed the 3,000 meters at the Birmingham Southern Indoor Icebreaker in December.
 
Balcer becomes the second Choctaw to garner the conference's freshman of the week accolade this season as he joins Wesley Gibbs, who earned the honor on Dec. 8, 2021.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 as it travels to Birmingham, Ala., for the Samford University Open at the Birmingham Crossplex.
