Choctaws fall to Palm Beach Atlantic

The Mississippi College Men's Soccer team fell 4-1 to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday evening (Sept. 4) in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Choctaws fall to 0-2 (0-0) while the Sailfish improved to 2-0 (0-0).

Palm Beach Atlantic struck first midway through the first half as Quenzi Huerman scored in the 27th minute from the edge of the box on an assist from Fred Ferreira. The score remained a 1-0 PBA advantage through the rest of the first half even though the Choctaws made a big push at the end of the half. MC had 5 shots in the final 6 minutes of the opening 45 which included what was almost an incredible goal from Luke Fanstone, but his shot rang off the crossbar in the 45th minute. Fanstone also put another shot on goal and forced a save just seconds later.

The Sailfish took a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd half as Fred Ferriera scored against the run of play. MC had been in control in the opening minutes of the 2nd half before Ferreira's goal in the 49th minute.

Then the Choctaws got a big goal just a minute later as Noah Wagner scored his first goal as a Choctaw in the 50th minute. The former JuCo All-American scored off an assist from Abel Perez. It marked Wagner's 1st goal in just his 2nd match for MC.

The game continued to be back and forth over the next chunk of game as the Choctaws were seeking the equalizer. Palm Beach Atlantic scored a backbreaking goal as Bicho Barquin scored in transition in the 82nd minute. PBA then added their final goal in the 83rd minute.

Overall, total shots were pretty even as PBA edged MC 13-11. The Sailfish also had an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Wagner led MC in both categories as he had 3 shots with all 3 being on goal. Soane Dominguet Folituu and Luke Fanstone both also added 2 shots apiece.

The Choctaws will be back in action next weekend as they return to Clinton for their first home matches of the season. MC will host Harding University on Friday (Sept. 10) and Ouachita Baptist on Sunday (Sept. 12). Both matches will be at 3:00 pm CDT.
