Clinton, Miss--The Mississippi College men's soccer team knocked off Ouachita Baptist in commanding fashion 5-0 in their home opener on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 12). The Choctaws picked up their first win of the year as they improved to 1-2. Ouachita Baptist fell to 0-3-1.
The Choctaws' offense kicked into full gear after a rough opening weekend as they put 5 goals past the Tigers. Things got started early in the 14th minute as Filippo Bellú scored his first goal as a Choctaw as he scored on a header off of a corner from
Gonzalo Carrasco.
Noah Wagner then doubled the Choctaws' lead in the 21st minute as he beat the Ouachita keeper for a ball then put it in the net for his 2nd goal of the season. The assist came from
Zach Diallo.
Diallo then got in on the scoring action in the 29th minute as he received a long assist from
Aurele Chemin then beat a defender 1v1 before scoring on a blistering shot that the Ouachita goalkeeper got a hand on, but couldn't affect enough to keep out of the net.Â
The Choctaws took that 3-0 lead into the half. MC outshot the Tigers 12-2 in the 1st half as they controlled the action.
In the 2nd half, it was much of the same for the Choctaws. Wagner locked up a brace in the match as he scored his 2nd goal in the 59th minute after a ball from
Guilherme Santos deflected high into the air off of a defender and then fell for Wagner who then turned and scored.
The 5th goal for the Choctaws came in the 87th minute as BellúÂ scored his 2nd goal of the match to get his brace. He was assisted on the goal from
Pedro Cortes.
Overall, MC controlled the match as they outshot Ouachita 16-4. Wagner led the way for MC in shots with 6.Â
Next up, the Choctaws will head into Gulf South Conference play. They will travel to take on AUM next Friday evening (Sept. 17) at 7:00 pm. They will then take on Montevallo on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19) at 3:00 pm. Both of those matches will follow the women's soccer teams' games against the same schools right before. MC was picked to finish 1st in the GSC preseason poll heading into the season.
