The Mississippi College men's soccer team knocked off Montevallo 3-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19). The Choctaws improved to 2-3 (1-1 GSC) on the year while Montevallo fell to 4-1-1 (1-1 GSC).
Neither team got anything going early, and then the match was delayed in the 40th minute due to lightning in the area.
Following the delay, the Choctaws struck quickly as
Julio Rangel scored his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute off assists from
Antoine Recizac and
Abel Perez to give MC the lead.
Recizac then got in on the scoring action as he doubled MC's lead just 58 seconds later as he scored off an assist from
Soane Deminguet Folituu. This was also Recizac's first goal of the season.
MC would take that 2-0 lead into halftime, although it was a truncated break due to the lightning delay coming just minutes before the halftime mark.
Montevallo got a goal back in the 60th minute on a goal from Edin Hernandez.
The 2-1 lead for MC held for a majority of the rest of the match. Montevallo began pushing for the equalizer late, but
Noah Wagner scored the 90th minute dagger for the Choctaws which gave MC a 3-1 lead on Wagner's 4th goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.
Montevallo led the match in shots 17-13, but MC had the more threatening chances as they led 10-6 in shots on goal. Wagner led the way for MC with 3 shots (all 3 were on goal). Recizac and Filippo Bellú both added 2 shots apiece.
Alejandro Chavarria also had 5 saves in goal for the Choctaws.
MC will return home next weekend as they host Lee University on Friday afternoon (Sept. 24) at 3:30 pm. They will then host Shorter University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26) at 3:30 pm.
