Avelar's Late Goal Leads Lady Choctaws to 2-1 Win Over UWA

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team passed their stiffest test of the season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over West Alabama on Friday night at Arrow Field on the campus of Clinton High School.

The Lady Choctaws (4-0, 4-0 GSC) won their 17th straight GSC regular season contest with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - It was West Alabama that took the early lead as Megan Ongteco found the back of the net on an assist from Anele Komani in the 6th minute.
  - Dealing with their first deficit of the season, the Lady Choctaws responded in the 17th minute when Beatrice Currie scored her first goal as a Lady Choctaws on a cross from Avery Hederman.
  - The match went into halftime with the score knotted at 1-1.
  - In the second half, the teams remain deadlocked over the next 25 minutes as overtime appeared imminent.
  - The Lady Choctaws scored the game-winner in the 71st minute as Dani Avelar took an assist from MaryElla White and slid it into the lower left corner.
  - MC would go on to clinch their 17th straight regular season GSC victory.

KEY STATS
  - The Lady Choctaws took nine shots and allowed just five in the victory.
  - The two MC goals were the first West Alabama has allowed all season.
  - Ebba Elweroth made two saves for the Lady Choctaws, while Tabitha Weldon made a save for the Tigers.
  - Erin Hederman had a team-high five shots, while Currie tallied a game-high two shots on goal.

NEXT UP
  - The Lady Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action next Thursday (Mar. 11) when they travel to Cleveland to face rival Delta State.
