Lady Choctaws Fall in Series Finale to #9 Valdosta State, 9-1

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped the series finale to #9 Valdosta State by a score of 9-1 on Sunday afternoon at Steel's Diamond.

The Lady Choctaws (3-8, 2-4 GSC) trailed just 3-1 through four innings, but the Blazers (8-1, 6-0 GSC) pulled away late for the five-inning victory and the series sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  - The nationally-ranked Blazers struck first in the opening inning as two runners reached with two outs and Aniston Gano hit a three-run home run to make the score 3-0.
  - The Lady Choctaws answered back in the second with a solo home run from Brooke Fagan, who had two of MC's three hits in the contest.
  - The Blazers added another run in the 5th on a Gano home run to make the score 4-1.
  - They put the game away in the 6th as three straight home runs gave VSU the run-rule victory.

KEY STATS
  - The Blazers notched six of their 10 total hits in the final two innings, breaking open what was a close contest through 4.0 innings.
  - Fagan had two of MC's hits, including the home run, while Annemarie Peavy had the other base-knock.
  - Gano had three hits and four RBI to lead the VSU offense, while Morgan Hill, Nicole Pennington and Kiley Robb also homered in the win.
  - Avery Sanders (2-6) took the loss for MC, allowing five hits and five earned runs over 3.1 innings.
  - Samantha Richards (5-1) earned her second win of the weekend, giving up just three hits with one earned run and six strikeouts.

NEXT UP
  - The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Friday (Mar. 5) when they travel to Pensacola to open a three-game series with West Florida.
