Tigers' Second Half Too Much for Women's Hoops

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- Mikeba Jones ties a season-high in scoring as the Mississippi College women's basketball team falls to the University of West Alabama, 52-44, on Saturday, Feb. 13 inside Pruitt Hall. MC moves to 3-9 on the season and in the Gulf South Conference. The Tigers improve to 7-6 overall and even their conference record at 6-6.
 
Jones led the Lady Choctaws with 17 points in the contest. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native tied Jay Levy with a team-best four rebounds on the afternoon. NeNe Williams added nine points.
 
Mississippi College shot 30 percent from the field and shot just 57 percent from the charity stripe. The Navy and Gold totaled 28 rebounds in the contest.
 
West Alabama was led in scoring by Zoe Watts with 19 points. Watts also tied Lauryn Lilly with a team-best eight rebounds. Naelyn Rios added 12 points to join Watts in double figures.
 
The Tigers connected on 43 percent of their shots from the floor and were 17-of-20 from the free throw line for 85 percent. The Red and White grabbed 37 boards on the afternoon.

Mississippi College and West Alabama meet again on Sunday, Feb. 14 in Livingston, Ala. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi College opened the game behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Rivers Futral and Kyiah Julian. The two quick treys helped the Lady Choctaws hold a 13-8 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.
- MC expanded on its lead in the second period as it held as much as a 10-point lead. The Navy and Gold grabbed its largest lead of the game behind a 3-pointer from Williams and took an eight-point advantage into the locker room at the half, 25-17.
- West Alabama grabbed its first lead of the game,33-32, with 2:27 left in the third quarter as the Tigers used a 16-7 run. MC knotted the contest at 33-all, but the Red and White scored three of the last five points in the quarter to hold a 36-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
- The Tigers' lead swelled to 44-35 midway through the final quarter – their largest of the game – on a jumper from Watts. MC cut into the lead as it narrowed the margin to 48-44 with 33 seconds left, but the Red and White knocked down four consecutive free throws to ice the contest.
 
KEY NOTES/STATS
- Jones' scoring mark matched her total at Delta State on Dec. 18, 2020. It's her fifth time in double figures this season.
- With the scoring performance, it's the fifth time this season Jones has led the Lady Choctaws in scoring this season and 10th in her career.
-The setback evens the series record between Mississippi College and West Alabama at 15-each. The Tigers have won the last two outings.
