BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Mississippi College's Ally Alford has been named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
 
Alford led the Choctaws in scoring this week as she accumulated 31 points during the two-game span. She tied a season-high as she scored 21 points in a 108-38 over MUW. She accounted for 19 points in the second quarter alone, the most by a Choctaw, as she went 7-for-9 from the field in the period, including 5, 3-pointers. Her five treys were among the program's single-game, 3-point record 12 in the victory.
 
She added a 10-point effort in the win at Montevallo to help extend the Navy and Gold's win streak to three. Alford has scored in double figures in five contests this season, including the last three outings.
 
The Batesville, Miss., native is averaging a team-best 11.4 points per game this season and is shooting 38.9 percent from the field, including a 34.0 clip from behind the arc.
 
Alford becomes the first Choctaw to garner a GSC weekly award in program history. The last Choctaw to earn a weekly honor was Ebony Williams on American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week on Jan. 7, 2013.
 
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 18 as it hosts Union (Tenn.) University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
