CLINTON, Miss.---The Mississippi College women's soccer team knocked off Delta State 4-3 in 2nd overtime on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 4) in both team's regular season finales. The Lady Choctaws improved to 12-4 overall (10-3 GSC) on the year and locked up the #2 seed in next week's GSC tournament. Delta State fell to 8-7-2 overall (8-3-2 GSC) on the year and will be the #3 seed in the GSC tournament.
Delta State struck first in the 11th minute when Mia Ramirez was controversially ruled to be barely onside as she got past the MC back line and slotted it home to put the Lady Statesman up 1-0 early.
MC then equalized in the 32 minute as
Avery Hederman scored as she converted a penalty kick that was drawn by
MaryElla White.
Just minutes later
Kaylee Foster put the Lady Choctaws ahead as she put home a pass into the box from
Marisa Saunders to put MC ahead 2-1 in the 38th minute. The assist marks Saunders' 1st of the season.
That 2-1 margin would remain until the half.
Avery Hederman would add her 2nd goal of the contest to double MC's lead in the 71st minute as she scored from outside the box. The goals put Hederman at 6 on the year.
Delta State would get back into the match late though as Poppy Derhun scored on an assist from Jae'lasha Julien in the 86th minute to cut MC's lead to 3-2.
The Lady Statesman would then equalize just moments later as Julien scored on an assist from Robyn Moody in the 88th minute to tie up the match and send it to overtime.
Neither team was able to breakthrough in the 1st overtime or for much of the 2nd overtime.
Then, just when a draw seemed destined,
Kaylee Foster got on the end of a ball into the box from
Avery Hederman and then chipped it over the Delta State keeper to give MC the dramatic 4-3 win with just 30 seconds remaining in the match. The 2 goals were Foster's first 2 of the season.
Overall, MC outshot Delta State 24-12 and held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Hederman led the way for MC with 6 shots and 3 shots on goal. Foster also added 5 shots while
Beatrice Currie added 4.
Next up, the Lady Choctaws will head into the GSC tournament on Sunday (Nov. 7). MC will be the #2 seed in the tournament and will host the #7 seed in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
