Lady Choctaws Fall In PK's in GSC Quarterfinals

CLINTON, Miss---The Mississippi College women's soccer team fell to West Alabama in a Penalty Kick Shootout in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 7). The Lady Choctaws fell to 12-4-1 overall (10-3 GSC) on the year. West Alabama improved to 8-5-4 overall (6-4-2 GSC) on the year.

Regulation and both overtime periods ended without a score, and then West Alabama came out on top 5-4 after 7 rounds of PK's.

Neither team got much going offensively in the 1st half, but MC did have more of the chances. In the 1st half, MC outshot West Alabama 13-3.

The early part of the 2nd half was much of the same, but MC goalkeeper Sara Maleski and West Alabama goalkeeper Tabitha Weldon eventually had to make some plays to keep things even. The match would remain scoreless after 90 minutes, sending the match into OT.

MC had 5 shots in each Overtime period (to West Alabama's none), but couldn't find the game-winner. Beatrice Currie and Kaylee Foster both had shots on goal in the 2nd Overtime period, but couldn't put them in the back of the net. The match would head to PK's after the 2nd overtime ended scoreless.

MC took the advantage early in PK's when Emma Young made her PK before West Alabama missed theirs. Both team's would then make 3 straight penalties in Rounds 2-4 with Kaylee Foster, Julia Murdoch, and Kathryn Knuth all making theirs for the Lady Choctaws to put MC up 4-3 after 4 rounds. MC then missed 3 straight penalties with all 3 hitting the crossbar. After MC's miss in the 5th round, West Alabama converted theirs to force sudden death PK's. After MC's miss to lead off the 6th round, Maleski made the save to keep things alive for MC. After the Lady Choctaw's miss in the 7th round, Nikol Gonzalez put home the decisive PK to win it for West Alabama.

Overall, MC outshot West Alabama 34-5 and held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Avery Hederman led the way for MC with 8 shots. Beatrice Currie also added 6 shots, plus led the team in shots on goal with 3. Sara Maleski also made 4 shots in net for the Lady Choctaws.

MC will now await their NCAA tournament fate. The Lady Choctaws will hope to secure an at-large berth in the South Region. MC was ranked 4th in the latest NCAA region rankings. The top 6 from the South Region qualify for the NCAA tournament.
