Clinton, Miss. - In a contest that featured the nationally ranked West Georgia Wolves and the Mississippi College Choctaws, MC came up short, falling 40-21 in a hard fought game at Robinson-Hale Stadium. MC picked up 229 rushing yards behind quarterback
DeAnte' Smith-Moore who tallied 89 yards on the ground.
West Georgia drove deep into MC territory on the opening drive, but only managed to get a field goal. The following possession, the Choctaws went 75 yards on nine plays capped off by a
Jaylin Jones score to go up 7-3 with 7:59 in the opening period.The Wolves would answer back to regain the lead 10-7 heading to the second quarter.
The second quarter was dominated by the Wolves outscoring the Choctaws 17-0 for a 27-7 lead at the half.
MC cut into the lead in the third quarter on a 9-yard run by
Marcus Williams making the score 27-14 at the 3:43 mark. Following a fumble recovery on the next possession, MC found the endzone again on a 4-yard quarterback sneak from
Tytus Heard to take the lead down to six at 27-21 with 10:19 remaining. West Georgia finished the game outscoring MC 13-0.
Running back
Sam Wilder had 72 yards on three carries, including a 45-yard run to set up the Choctaws first score of the afternoon.
Defensively, MC was led by
Josh Miller who totaled 12 tackles along with two tackles for loss.
Jonathan Jones accumulated nine tackles, with seven solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
With the loss, the Choctaws fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in GSC play. MC returns to the field next weekend on the road at Shorter. Kickoff is set for 12 pm CST.
