ROME, Ga. -- Mississippi College brought back home a win after defeating Shorter by a final score of 20-7 Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play.
Mississippi College racked up over 200 yards on the ground, including two rushing touchdowns and one through the air.
Shorter struck first with an opening possession touchdown drive of 11 plays, 65 yards, that took up 5:23 on the clock, giving the Hawks the early 7-0 lead.
Mississippi College answered with 4:28 left in the first half after a one play, 61-yard toss from
DeAnte Smith-Moore to
Marcus Williams that knotted the game up at 7-7.Â
The Choctaws and Hawks entered the break tied up at 7-7. Mississippi College took a touchdown lead with 11:11 on the clock in the third quarter after
Marcus Williams punched a 5-yard riush into the endzone for his second touchdown of the afternoon.Â
Five minutes later,
Cole Fagan added touchdown to the board, with a 26-yard rushing touchdown to give MC a 20-7 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.Â
Mississippi College finished with 206 yards on the ground including an average of 5.5 yards per rush. The Choctaws also added 149 yards passing on the afternoon, including the 61-yard touchdown from Smith-Moore to Williams.Â
Smith-Moore led MC with 135 yards on the ground and 149 yards passing. Williams led MC with 61 yards through receiving and one touchdown reception. Fagan finished second on the team with 54 yards rushing, including 6.8 yards per carry and one touchdown.Â
Defensively,
Zadok Esters and
Jaylan Woods led MC with eight total tackle.
Josh Miller and
Jonathan Jones each had seven tackles on the afternoon. Mississippi College held Shorter to zero points on the final nine drives of the afternoon, including holding Shorter to 292 yards of total offense.
Mississippi College improves to 3-3 overall on the season including 2-2 in GSC play. MC returns home next Saturday, Oct. 23 versus #3 Valdosta State in Clinton, Miss. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Robinson-Hale Stadium.
