MC drops heartbreaker to West Alabama 1-0

The Mississippi College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to West Alabama 1-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3). MC fell to 6-3 (4-2 GSC) while West Alabama improved to 4-2-1 (2-1 GSC).

It was a fairly quiet first half with neither team getting any major chances and the match was scoreless heading into the break. Overall in the 1st half, MC outshot West Alabama 7-3 and had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.

The opening of the 2nd half was much of the same with each team getting some looks, but neither team overly threatening either keeper. As the 2nd half progressed on, the match opened up with each team looking for a game winner.

In the final minutes the match seemed destined for overtime, but right at the end of the 89th minute MC was called for a foul that was right on the edge of the box. After a discussion, the foul was ruled to have occurred just inside the box and a penalty kick was given to West Alabama. Kaylah Butterworth sharply slotted home the penalty for West Alabama to give them the 1-0 lead with a minute remaining.

In the final minute, MC made a big push to find an equalizer, but couldn't find one as West Alabama got the 1-0 victory.

Overall, MC outshot West Alabama 13-12 and had a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Avery Hederman led the way for MC in shots with 4. Beatrice Currie also added 3. Sara Maleski also made 3 saves in goal.

The Lady Choctaws will return home next weekend as they host Valdosta State on Friday afternoon (Oct. 8) and West Georgia on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10).
