Avelar's early goal propels Lady Choctaws past UAH

The Mississippi College women's soccer team knocked off the University of Alabama at Huntsville 1-0 on Friday afternoon (Oct. 1). MC improved to 6-2 (4-1 GSC) on the year, while UAH fell to 3-2-1 (1-1 GSC).

Dani Avelar got the deciding goal early as she put home a pass from Holly Pascoe in the 5th minute. The goal marked Avelar's 3rd goal of the season and it marked Pascoe's 4th assist of the season (which is tied for the team lead).

Both team's had some chances throughout the remainder of the 1st half, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

In the 2nd half, with UAH searching for the equalizer and MC searching for a dagger 2nd goal, each team had some great chances that forced saves and/or hit the post but neither team scored as the match finished 1-0 in MC's favor. In the 2nd half, MC had 7 shots while UAH had 3.

Overall, MC had the run of play outshooting UAH 12-7 and had the edge in shots on goal as well 7-2. Beatrice Currie led the way with 4 shots and 3 shots on goal. Sara Maleski also recorded 2 saves in goal for MC while also recording the clean sheet. 

The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3) as they travel to take on West Alabama at 1:00 pm.
