Choctaws battle to 1-1 draw with UAH

The Mississippi College men's soccer team battled to a hard fought 1-1 draw with the University of Alabama at Huntsville Chargers on Friday evening (Oct. 1). The Choctaws move to 3-4-1 (2-2-1 GSC) on the season while UAH moves to 2-2-2 overall (0-1-1 GSC).

One of the biggest moments of the match came early in the 13th minute when MC goalkeeper Alejandro Chavarria made a huge save off his line after a UAH attacker got behind the MC backline.

Then, just minutes later the Choctaws took the lead as Filippo Bellu scored in the 19th minute off an assist from Pedro Cortes. The goal marked Bellu's 4th of the season and the assist was Cortes' 2nd of the year. That 1-0 MC lead would remain for the remainder of the 1st half.

UAH got the tough equalizer in the 77th minute when Andres Rodriguez scored on a corner. Connor Young was credited with the assist.

With the match tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the 2 teams went into 20 minutes of overtime, but neither team could find the golden goal even with both team's getting some solid chances as the match ended in a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Overall, UAH had the 18-6 advantage in shots and also had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Bellu led MC in shots with 2 (both were on goal to lead the team in that category as well). Chavarria also made 5 saves in goal for the Choctaws.

MC will be back in action Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3) as they head to Livingston, Ala. to battle West Alabama.
