The Mississippi College men's soccer team knocked off the University of West Alabama Tigers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 3). The Choctaws improve to 4-4-1 (3-2-1 GSC) on the year, while West Alabama fell to 3-5 (1-2 GSC).
Pedro Cortes put MC up in the 19th minute as he shot from the right side of the box and expertly slotted the ball into the left side of the net. The goal marked his 1st goal of the season.
That 1-0 scoreline would remain through the end of the 1st half as neither team put much pressure on either goal. MC outshot West Alabama 4-1 in the 1st half.
The pace of play picked up substantially in the 2nd half with more shots and fouls, plus play at time franticly going back and forth. The Choctaws got the massive 2nd goal of the match in the 71st minute when
Antoine Recizac sped down the line on a run then put a good cross in to Filippo Bellu who did well to put it home on a volley to put the Choctaws up 2-0.
Even with play still moving at a fast pace, the Choctaws were able to see out the match and pick up a 2-0 win.
Overall, MC outshot West Alabama 14-10 and had a hefty 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Guillherme Santos and
Noah Wagner led the way for MC with 3 shots apiece. Wagner also led the Choctaws with 2 shots on goal.
Alejandro Chavarria made 3 saves for MC as he got the clean sheet in goal.
Up next, the Choctaws will take a break from GSC play as they take on Texas-Tyler on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 6). They will then take on LSU-Alexandria on the road the following Monday (Oct. 11).
